Speaking afterwards, Iraola admitted Gomez's injury was "probably the worst news" of the game.

Liverpool were forced to rely on academy defenders for much of the match, and while they coped well against Sunderland, the injury highlighted an area that may require reinforcement before competitive football begins.
What Iraola's first match revealed
One pre-season friendly cannot answer every question, but it did offer reasons for optimism.
Liverpool created plenty of chances, responded positively after falling behind and showed the intensity that supporters have come to expect from Iraola's teams.
