How did Ecuador come back to beat Germany 2-1?
Germany started fast. Leroy Sané opened the scoring in the second minute with a one-time finish into the bottom-left corner past Manuel Neuer. Two minutes into the match Germany were in front and on track to top Group E with three wins.
Ecuador answered in the ninth minute. Nilson Angulo collected the ball outside the German penalty area and bent a long-range shot past Neuer for 1-1. The strike took the edge off Germany's early dominance and reset the match.
The second half belonged to Ecuador. Substitute Kevin Rodríguez glanced a corner kick towards the centre of the box in the 77th minute. Gonzalo Plata arrived to poke the ball past Neuer for 2-1. Germany pushed for an equaliser but Ecuador's defensive shape held. The result confirmed Ecuador's place in the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed sides under the 48-team format.
Why Germany still topped Group E
Germany lost the match but won the group. Nagelsmann's side opened the tournament with a 7-1 win over Curaçao at NRG Stadium in Houston, one of the heaviest results of the group stage. That win produced a goal-difference cushion the 2-1 loss to Ecuador could not undo.
Germany finished Group E on six points level with Ivory Coast on six. Ecuador came third on four points. Curaçao were eliminated. Germany topped the group on goal difference thanks to the Curaçao result, with Ivory Coast joining them and Ecuador progressing as a third-placed team.
It is the position Nagelsmann would have taken at kick-off. Germany now go into the round of 32 as Group E winners and will play one of the qualifying third-placed teams in the next round. The defeat is the kind of warning shot that resets focus before a knockout campaign begins.
